INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

I provide a safe space of acceptance for issues to be discussed, worked on, and obstacles to be overcome.  My belief is that the answers are within you, and I can provide hope for both of us on the journey to find them.  I primarily use Solution Focused Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.  When appropriate, I use an eclectic approach including  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and other tools that teach skills needed and meet individual needs.

I offer a neutral party to assist with managing any destructive elements in your relationship with a partner or ex-partner, and can assist you both to enhance your relationship.  Communication that works is a primary focus for positive relationships.  I use a Solution Focused approach while assisting with any new skills needed.

CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELING

Considering quitting any substance, whether or not you feel it is an addiction, may mean a change of lifestyle and a transition in the way you make decisions in your world.  I can help you decide what your priorities are now, and how you want to manage your use.  Motivational Interviewing is approach I use, and bring in Solution Focused Therapy to help help with any problems you see in getting where you want to go.  When substance use is an issue, family and loved ones also deal with whatever change you might choose or not choose.  They can be included in any way that you decide is important.

MENTAL ILLNESS

I worked for over 17 years with people who were disabled by severe and persistent mental illness.  With people who are disabled by their mental illness there is a higher rate of co-occurring substance abuse.  I am familiar with psychiatric medications and the issues people have with managing a major mental illness.  I also have great empathy for the difficulties that managing your illness in your own way can present.  I would be happy to work with you to develop any skills that can make your task of management easier.  I have seen people with mental illness take their lives back and thrive and know it is possible.

I am also a good support for family members who are dealing with a loved one with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorder, or personality disorder.  It is often very difficult to tell if you are helping or hurting someone you love when their symptoms worsen.  Sometimes discussion with a counselor who has a familiarity with mental illness can really help to discuss the challenges.  One of the greatest challenges is everyone in the family truly understanding what their family member getting a diagnosis might mean in their lives.
